Study Hall and Electronics Policies
Study Hall
It is highly discouraged that any student have more than two free periods per day. If your student is in this situation, please consider taking more classes or rearranging your ride schedule.
The following Study Hall policies are in effect:
Electronics
ARCHES PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY POLICY:
To support a constructive learning environment in which students and tutors can fully engage with their classmates, and instruction, the ARCHES Board of Directors has determined that the use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices (PED) by students during school hours should be prohibited.
The objective of this policy is to align with our mission of creating an enriching class environment for students. The Board of Directors has also determined that this policy aligns appropriately with trends across the country where almost 80% of school districts are restricting PED access. AFTD (Away for the Day) policies are becoming increasingly common to promote better learning outcomes.
I. Research
It is highly discouraged that any student have more than two free periods per day. If your student is in this situation, please consider taking more classes or rearranging your ride schedule.
The following Study Hall policies are in effect:
- The first 50 minutes of each period will be reserved exclusively for study. Students in this room must work on homework or read. Be prepared to do so.
- During this time, students will not be allowed to sit in groups.
- Backpacks are to be on the floor or a chair, not on the tables, and coats will be hung on the coat rack in the hallway.
- There needs to be at least one chair separating students from each other during silent study hall.
- All ARCHES policies and conduct rules apply to study hall times.
- The ARCHES discipline policy applies to inappropriate behavior during study hall time.
- Talking at a reasonable volume and quiet games will be allowed during the last 20 minutes of each study hall period.
- Those wishing to quietly study the last 20 minutes may do so in an unoccupied classroom.
Electronics
- As they grow in popularity, electronics have become a huge distraction in the study hall and, in some cases, classrooms. Therefore, no cameras, phones, or other electronic or music listening devices are allowed in ARCHES study halls or classrooms with the exception of laptops for schoolwork purposes in the study hall only.
- There will be no sharing of music and electronic games are not allowed under any circumstances.
- Laptops are allowed with a signed waiver from parent and administrator for schoolwork purposes only.
- Parents are responsible for setting up proper internet safety programs on students' computers as wifi codes are posted prominently in St Joseph's building.
- Laptops will be closely supervised by study hall monitors.
- Students who break this rule will have their electronics confiscated for the day.

I. Research
- Research shows that student use of cellphones in schools has negative effects on student performance and mental health. Cell phones distract students from classroom instruction, resulting in smaller learning gains and lower test scores. Increased cell phone use has led to higher levels of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders in children.
- This policy applies to the use of cell phones, smart watches, iPads, and any other PED by students while at ARCHES during regular hours of operation.
- Students are prohibited from using PED including: cell phones, iPads, smart watches, VR and any other item deemed to be a PED at all times.
- During class, students shall put their device in “airplane mode” and deposit their PED in a basket that will be secured by the tutor during the class. Upon completion of the class, the students will pick up his/her device, but it MUST be placed in his/her backpacks and out of use at all times.
- A student may use a cell phone to monitor or address a health concern if formal notification is received from their parents.
- If a student violates this policy, a tutor or administrator shall take the following progressively serious disciplinary measures:
- 1st time - Device confiscated and brought to the administrator. Students can pick up the device at the end of the school day. Staff contacts home.
- 2nd time - Device confiscated and brought to the administrator. Parent/Guardian pick up required.
- 3rd time- Device confiscated and brought to administrator. Parent/Guardian pick up required. Conference will be held with the administrator, student, and parent.
