British History
Course Expectations for British History:
Recommended for students in 9th-12th grade.
Students who take this course will study the history of Britain from the time of the first Roman landing in 55 B.C. through the present day. Learn more about this world at the far edge of the Roman Empire, a land of castles and knights, whose people played a central role in the World Wars of the twentieth century. The focus of the class is mainly on England, with added emphasis on historical sites and artifacts that still exist today, as well as British church history. This class will include a variety of projects, writing assignments, and the study of primary sources from each of the major eras in British history.
Minimum Expectations:
• Parents will assume all responsibility for making sure homework assignments are proofread and done on time.
• Parents must help their students edit all writing assignments. Guidelines are given in the writer’s checklist that each student will receive. Elements of Grammar by Strunk and White is a valuable resource to assist you with this.
• Students will attend class regularly and participate in the discussion. Prior notice of all absences is required.
• Significant outside reading is required for this class. Parents are expected to ensure reading is completed.
• Quizzes are not an optional part of the class. Students will be quizzed periodically on the material covered in class and in the assigned reading.
• Taking notes on materials covered in this class is required.
• Additional assignments will be given each semester. Completed assignments must be turned in on the deadlines given by the tutor.
• Late homework or absences will be accepted only if requested in advance by parents.
• It is recommended that parents provide additional related learning experiences outside of this class as well.
British History Enrichment Suggestions:
• Begin a timeline to use throughout your study of history and literature in ARCHES classes.
• Create maps illustrating the points of history studied.
• Watch historical movies and documentaries.
• Discuss any connections to Britain with family.
• Assign additional research on the monarchy, major wars, and saints associated with Britain, as well as additional reading, especially biographies and historical fiction.
