Grammar & Writing I
Course Expectations for Grammar & Writing:
Recommended for students in 7th-9th grade
Grammar & Writing meets two times per week and is a full year course. Students will learn all the grammar skills needed to write and speak with eloquence and confidence. Students will engage in diagramming exercises to reinforce the rules and help technical and visual learners to understand and use the English language effectively. In addition, students will learn writing techniques that will guide them through note taking, discerning the main idea, identifying good and poor qualities present in a person or event, contrasting different behaviors and their effects, crafting effective conclusions of persuasion and learning to write a research paper in all its parts.
Minimum Expectations:
• Parents are expected to be fully engaged in the process of their child's comprehending and practicing the grammatical concepts taught in this class.
• Parents will assume all responsibility for making sure homework assignments are done on time.
• There will be a required independent study component to this class which makes up for the lack of classroom time.
• Students will attend class regularly and participate in the discussion. Prior notice of all absences is required.
• Quizzes and tests are not an optional part of the class. Students will be quizzed periodically on the material covered in the assigned homework.
• In order for this class to have full credit value, students should plan to take Grammar & Writing for the full year.
Enrichment Suggestions:
• Daily practice of the concepts learned in class
• Use your skills to help younger siblings or other students edit their written work.
• Additional personal writing (journaling, letters, etc.)
There are constant mistakes in print. Get in the habit of editing items you read.
ARCHES tutorial- based classes are designed to supplement course work being done in home schools, thereby following the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church in proclaiming parents as the primary educators of their children.
