Latin
Course Expectations for Latin:
Recommended for students in 7th-12th grade
The goal of this Latin course is to introduce the language as a living, spoken means of communication at a basic level. Students will be able to speak about daily topics, basic biographical information, and a repertoire of prayers and chants. This is how the Church envisions her language to be taught. This intuitive or 'natural' method is the most effective and long-lasting means of learning Latin because it is the one used for more than a millennium by the Church, and how we all learned our mother-tongue. The analytical or exclusively-translation method is only a recent, secular introduction into Latin curriculum.
The course presupposes no previous study, though that would not pose a redundancy. The main language of instruction is Latin, but all the onus is placed upon the instructor, who explains by means of acting, demonstration, games, and song to make the process of learning intuitive and rewarding for the students, who are also taught to respond in Latin. This is supported by English for explanations as the instructor finds necessary.
The instructor has years of experience using the curriculum with students of varying ages, with extraordinary success. Students are generally very excited to speak the language of the Church as their own.
Materials:
-Hans Orberg's masterpiece Familia Romana
-Workbook Exercitia Latina
-Excerpts from liturgical books, Gregorian chant, and Vulgate Bible as supplements, provided by instructor
Fees (per semester):
Tutor: Sean Pilcher
