American History
Students who take this course will receive a rich historical teaching of North America from the beginnings of the first inhabitants in 2,500 B.C. all the way to the present day. This class will include various projects that allow students to teach themselves and others about history. The focus of the class is mainly on the United States, but historical teachings of the events of the Catholic Church in America will be included. No part of history is boring when you understand the full meaning of what is happening and why. The teaching of correct history has sadly been a lost cause in recent decades, but with the work of a new textbook from the Catholic Textbook Project and ARCHES' strong mission, this class will fill in those historical gaps with an open-minded, accurate teaching of our great nation's story. Required Book: Land of Hope and Promises: A History of North America Published by: The Catholic Textbook Project, California

• Students will attend class regularly and participate in the discussion. Prior notice of all absences is required.

• Taking notes on materials covered in this class is required.
• Late homework or absences will be accepted only if requested in advance, by parents.
• In order for this class to have full credit value, it is highly recommended that parents provide additional related learning experiences outside of this class.
American History Enrichment Suggestions:

• Discussion with parents and grandparents/other seniors about their family history (i.e. immigration stories, WWI, WWII, great depression, Vietnam, etc.) adds reality and relevance to class.
American history is, after all, their history.
• Visit local historical sites (i.e. Fort Snelling, Capitol, Duluth museums, etc.)
• Assign additional research on major battles, tactics and generals during this time.
