Grammar I
Course Expectations for Grammar I:
Students will gain a basic understanding of the eight parts of speech recognizing nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. In this class, students will memorize Being Verbs, Helping Verbs, Linking Verbs, 10 various lists of pronouns, and 48 prepositions through frequent class recitation, games, and quizzes that will prepare them for standard and aptitude tests. Students will master basic diagramming and will understand the role each part of speech has in the construction of sentences. Vocabulary will be studied to extend the student's ability for better sentence structure.
Minimum Expectations:
• Parents are expected to be fully engaged in the process of their child's comprehending and
practicing the grammatical concepts taught in this class.
• Parents will assume all responsibility for making sure homework assignments are done on time.
• There will be a required independent study component to this class which makes up for the lack of
classroom time.
• Students will attend class regularly and participate in the discussion. Prior notice of all absences is
required.
• Quizzes and tests are not an optional part of the class. Students will be quizzed periodically on the
material covered in the assigned reading.
• In order for this class to have full credit value, it is highly recommended that parents provide
additional related learning experiences outside of this class.
Enrichment Suggestions:
• Daily practice of the concepts learned in class
• Use your skills to help younger siblings or other students edit their written work.
• Additional personal writing (journaling, letters, etc.)
There are constant mistakes in print. Get in the habit of editing items you read.
